How to Avoid Cavities and Tooth Decay

Your smile is one of your most wonderful assets, thus, the need to wear it every day. However, you would surely not want to wear a smile when you are suffering from cavities and tooth decay. For you not to suffer from such, here are some tips that you can consider.

Good Oral Hygiene Practice

This is the most important tip in avoiding tooth cavities and decay. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing regularly will remove the remaining food particles and sugar particles that are stuck in between the tooth. This will prevent the cavities from forming and will prevent the tooth from decaying. Use toothpaste with enough fluoride content so that it will help in keeping the teeth strong. Brushing your teeth every after meal and before going to bed is very important for the prevention of cavities and tooth decay.

When brushing your teeth, include cleaning your tongue and gums. If your gums are very sensitive, use a soft toothbrush to prevent gum bleeding. Mo`st bacteria are not stored on the teeth. Instead, they are stored on the tongue and on the gums, so you have to include cleaning them.

Eating the Right Kind of Food

Eating a healthy and balanced diet will help you prevent your teeth from getting cavities and from decaying. Make sure that you are getting enough vitamins and minerals. These food nutrients come from fruits and vegetables. By having this kind of healthy foods, you will be able to prevent the cavities from forming on your teeth and you will be able to avoid your teeth from getting decayed.

There are foods that you have to avoid as well because these foods can contribute to the formation of the cavities on your teeth. You have to limit your intake of the foods that are rich in sugar and carbohydrates. Also, you have to avoid eating foods and consuming drinks that have high contents of acids. These include the sodas and colas. It is not bad to eat these kinds of foods, but they should be limited only. Or else, you will expose your teeth to bacteria that can destroy your teeth.

After eating any kind of food, drink a glass of water. Drinking a glass of water after taking in any kind of food will return the pH level of your mouth to the normal level. With the normal pH level, it will be able to counteract the sugar and the acid that are present in the mouth. This will prevent the cavities from forming and the bacteria from destroying the teeth. Also, by drinking a lot of water, you will be able to prevent your mouth from getting dried.

Regular Dental Check-up

Sometimes, there are cavities that cannot be prevented from forming and they can destroy the teeth if they are left unattended. To remove these cavities, you have to visit your dentist at least once a year to have a dental checkup. Through this check-up, the hidden cavities will be spotted and will be removed. Also, your mouth will be extensively cleaned by your dentist. By cleaning the teeth, any remained food particle between the teeth that can attract bacteria and germs will be removed.
